Leah Wells

My current work centers on the concepts of the divine feminine, the embodiment of light and spirit, and our connectivity with the Universe. I explore these concepts through form, and the energy that defines it, using floral elements and organic materials that represent our connection to the earth and the feminine spirit that exists in all living things. I typically start by rendering a form in graphite and select botanicals that will express shape in the most powerful way. I am endlessly inspired by the irregularities and unexpected marks the dyes make with the application of heat and organic compounds. After the paper has been dyed, I further enhance with graphite, ink and/or watercolor to give additional shape, depth and texture to the form. The figurative work may remain two dimensional or may be constructed into sculptural forms that are representative of energy, emotion or personas. My hope is that this elemental work may highlight our connection to the Universe and to each other.
