Donna Leavitt

While in the Peace Corps I learned to put my big drawings in tablet form in order to pack them up. Since coming home I have continued with the multi-piece drawings as I find that approach give the big works an appealing liveliness and movement. Trees have been the subjects of my work for many years. i develop my format from photos I have taken from different parts of the world to my own yard! I want to bring the viewer’s focus up close to examine shadows and textures for an intimate visual experience. The work here shows my admiration and deep affinity for trees. My constant message is remind the viewer of their importance to all living things. They are great healers, as everyone who has walked amongst them, hugged one for blessing or comfort, can attest to. (The papers I use come from them!)

Torso

In this drawing I wanted to focus the viewer’s eye on the area of the tree that suggests so many aspects of human anatomy. The strength of the trunk reaching into limbs and roots makes a powerful connection with ourselves. This Poplar tree grows along Green Lake in Seattle

The Sentinel

48″ x 63″

$4,000

This is a Bald Cypress that intrigues me each time I see it as it has so much rhythm and linear interest. I wanted to focus the viewer’s eye on this particular quality of the tree along with its power and beauty

Royal Paulownia

72″ x 36”

$5,000

The Guardian

44″ x 63

$4,500

Guardian is a Poplar tree growing on the shore of Lake Ochrid in Struga, Macedonia. I wanted to show the structure via the light play among the branches giving the drawing its presence and dignity
