Anita Bell

I make contemporary paper artworks, working primarily with paper embellished with embroidery to create imaginary, abstract landscapes, sculptural wall pieces and handmade paper vessels. Using hand-coloured papers and thin thread, dense lines of stitch are overlaid like paint to build up depths of colour. I am inspired by the sky, particularly at dawn and dusk and try to capture the atmosphere of fleeting moments in time and reflect the constantly changing light. I try to depict the essence of something that is caught in an instant yet, remains elusive and ever-changing. More recent work is based on the myth of Persephone and uses natural plant dyes and sustainable plant papers. I am a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, the International Association of Papermakers and Artists (IAPMA) and an associate member of Art Space in Portsmouth and my work is included on the Crafts Council Directory.
