Jan Marie Sessler

I have been creating in Taos, New Mexico since 1993. In the late 90’s my focus shifted from painting to printmaking and collage, primarily to the technique of chine collé. This practice cemented a lifelong love of working with paper. I have long been drawn to weathered things – old books, paper, discarded objects and mysterious ephemera and have collected my intriguing finds. I deeply appreciate the softening and transforming effects of nature over time on things left behind and am greatly inspired by the dialogue between human culture and nature. In my works on paper I combine found elements and paper with additions of mark making and intuitive drawing. Once composed, the pieces are disassembled, turned upside down, dusted with wheat paste, and reassembled to be unified onto a paper substrate through the use of an etching press. The act of discovery encountering the found elements and the intuitive assemblage as I work, together offer me an inspiring and meditative creative practice.
