Mai La Thai

Ma La Thai Refugee Camp (Scene from Boat Film)

For the first time in my life, I turned a video camera on myself to reveal where I came from. Inspired by my family’s plight to freedom from Communist takeover in the 1970’s, I channeled my earliest childhood memories. A 10-minute narrative story unfolds through my minimal technique of combining paper cutouts, mechanical choreography, and deliberate omission of text or dialogue. Through this process, I was able to develop a visual style that I could repurpose into other films and concepts.
