Trained at the Art Students League of New York, I have worked in the descendance of Reginald Marsh and in some respects of Bay Area figuralists such as Nathan Oliveira in hoping to initiate the viewer into the rich beauty and mystery of ordinary urban and suburban life.
My canvases celebrate our most anonymous daily gestures and experience, but with a view to reveal in them an almost monumental mythical dimension — and the terror and beauty of existing. Human beings on the subway during their daily commute, or on a weekend excursion, appear under my brush, or so I hope, as heroes of modern grit and resourceful tenderness.
The insatiable impulse in me to paint is also an insatiable desire to communicate and to sustain our ever-assaulted humanity with the solidarity and comfort of form and color.
