b.j. spoke gallery presents wood sculptures and pen and ink drawings by gallery artist, Simon Hickey. On view from October 29 through November 24. Opening Reception, Saturday, November 9th from 6:00-9:00pm.
Hickey’s early career was centered strictly around hand carved, abstract sculptures made of polished black walnut and cherry wood, winning him numerous awards. In the recent years he’s been exhibiting his pen and ink drawings broadening his body of work. Hickey’s ink portraits have been well received at the highest competitive shows in the New York area.
“As a subtractive sculptor all my artistic efforts are governed by three basic elements, line, form, and movement. Line creates form and together line and form give life to movement. Whether sculpting, drawing or writing novels my initial approach is simple and straightforward. All of my work is meant to caress the human eye, an encounter on the simplest level. A respect for your materials along with a goal of beauty. Sounds easy, is hard.” – Simon Hickey
